Cristian Romero has officially completed his Tottenham Hotspur exit after Atlético Madrid confirmed the signing of the Argentina international.

The 28-year-old defender has joined the Spanish club on a long-term contract running until June 2031, bringing an end to his five-year spell in North London. GOAL reports that the transfer fee could reach around €40 million.

Romero had already announced his departure from Spurs on Friday, thanking the club, supporters, coaches and teammates for their support throughout his time in England.

The Argentine admitted that his journey at Tottenham "wasn't perfect" but said he was proud of what he achieved with the club.

His biggest success came during the 2024–25 season, when he helped Tottenham win the UEFA Europa League. The trophy ended Spurs' long wait for a major European title, and Romero was recognised as one of the outstanding performers of the campaign.

Five years and 156 appearances

Romero initially joined Tottenham on loan in 2021 before making the transfer permanent.

During his time with Spurs, he made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals, according to GOAL. He was also appointed Tottenham captain in 2025.

His performances made him one of the most important defenders in the Tottenham squad, although his aggressive style and disciplinary record also generated plenty of debate during his Spurs career.

Why Atlético Madrid wanted Romero

Atlético Madrid have been interested in Romero for some time. BBC Sport had reported Atlético's interest earlier in 2026, while ESPN later reported that Romero's future was becoming increasingly connected with a move to Madrid.

The move also reunites Romero with Atlético manager Diego Simeone, giving the defender an opportunity to continue his career in La Liga.

For Atlético, Romero brings considerable experience at both club and international level. He has won the World Cup and Copa América with Argentina and arrives with extensive experience in the Premier League and European competition.

What Romero leaves behind at Spurs

Romero leaves Tottenham having played an important role in one of the club's most memorable recent achievements.

His departure nevertheless creates another important decision for Spurs as they continue rebuilding their squad. Tottenham will now have to ensure there is enough quality and leadership in central defence following the captain's move to Spain.
